Bring in all 5 Feng Shui elements

feng shui elements

Life is all about balance – from what we eat, to where we stay. By intuitively using the five elements of Feng Shui to decorate your home, you can create a sense of harmony and balance.

Earth –

Earth elements such as terracotta pots or stone sculptures are good to incorporate. It represents stability, nourishment and protection to you and your relationships.

Metal –

Picture frames, curtain rails, and light fixtures can all provide feelings of clarity and precision.

Water –

A gentle stream of water provides calm and relaxation. It encourages the flow of good into your life. Mirrors are the most common expression of water.

Wood –

Considered to be the healing element of Feng Shui, wood brings vitality, growth and expansion. Think wooden bookshelves or house plants.

Fire –

When balanced correctly, fire will bring activity and energy to your personal and professional life. It symbolises passion, so light some candles and turn on your fireplace if you have one.

Clear dead plants, damaged items and clutter

In Feng Shui philosophy, dead plants and dried flowers are definitely not a good omen. They are said to represent death and weaken the positive energy in your house. Live, in bloom, plants and flowers strengthen the wood element to balance other materials in your space and is vital in bringing in energy of growth and action. Similarly, the colour green is largely associated with rejuvenation, which can breathe some life into your mind and body. Plus let’s face it, brown dying plants are ugly to look at anyway!

Broken items can cut off the flow of positive energy in your home. If you have noticed damaged items such as wobbly chairs or a chipped plate, try to let them go. Damaged items create challenging energy, especially broken clocks and mirrors. If it is sentimental, you do have the opportunity to repair them, but it is best to start fresh.

The Feng Shui definition of clutter is “postponed decisions and the inability to move forward.” This means that nothing new and good will flow into your life until you make room for it. Clutter fosters stagnant energy, and encourages a procrastination mentality. Try to maintain a tidy and organised living area to prevent these blocks.

Clean and dust your windows

Windows are the eyes of the house, and of those who live there. They represent our ability to see clearly, so if our windows are dirty, this can muddy our perception of life around us. Dirty windows also disrupt the flow of light and Chi (positive energy), so make sure these are kept nice and clean.

Keep entryway clear

Shoes, coats, bags… the list goes on! These are the things that can so easily accumulate near your front door. Try to find storage for these items that are out of sight from the entryway, otherwise, it limits opportunities from entering. Think of your hallways as the arteries of your home. Imagine them aiding the circulation of energy throughout your entire house. So, if you have any habits of leaving things out when you come home, it’s worth creating a new habit of putting these things away.

Place your bed in a commanding position

Bed placement is so important for healthy Chi. We spend the majority of our time in our beds and are at our most vulnerable while sleeping. Therefore, positioning your bed in a commanding position – where the door is easily in your line of sight while in bed, without directly facing it – will minimise negative energy and create a peaceful sanctuary for your body to rest and repair itself.

With it being a new year, treat this as an opportunity to let go of all the negative and welcome all the positive! When it’s time to redecorate your home, keep in mind our top tips of Feng Shui principles, so you can create the ultimate safe space for good luck and prosperity.
